Death of Duke Bainum a loss for environment

Duke Bainum's death is a sad loss for the environment. He had a strong voting record on environmental issues and was providing real leadership. We will miss him. He was a good friend.

Loudoun County Virginia goes green with help from Hawaii

Posted on August 6, 2009 at 9:30am 0 Comments

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved over $1 million in energy retrofits this last week. They are using an energy financing approach that leverages tax credits and stimulus bill funding and pays for the balance out of energy savings created by the projects with no upfront capital cost to local taxpayers. While this is commonly used by agencies in Hawaii, it was a first for Loudoun County in spite of Virginia law which specifically allows for it.

Living by principles

Well, we got beat by the big money campaign, but we stayed true to our principles by not taking special interest money and still came in second (out of 11).

Time to move on and find that next great opportunity to make a difference. No end to good causes.

Running for office is a very humbling experience. Lots of folks came out to signwave and help out. It was a true grassroots campaign. We'll just have to find other ways to fight the good fight on issues that matter. But… Continue

Posted on February 26, 2009 at 8:30pm 7 Comments

Noted environmentalist Steve Holmes is running again for the Honolulu City Council after serving 12 years previously.

He was term limited, but sat out a term and can now run again to represent Windward Oahu. He has a remarkable record of achievement. He added over 1,000 acres of land into park and preservation on the Windward side. He wrote and passed bills expanding recycling, saving energy, water conservation, and more.

Aloha,

Keith Rose here.

I’m organizing the ‘350 Honolulu’ rally to take place on Saturday October 24, 2009 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the State Capitol.

On that day throughout the world, rallies will be held to raise awareness of climate change and to establish a goal of 350 parts per million of CO2. This movement is in preparation for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen December 7-18, 2009.

This 350 ppm number is The Most Important Number in the World and is a tangible and appropriate goal that our leaders need to have in mind going into the Conference.

We want to make an iconic image from Honolulu and what I had in mind is to form a large human ‘350’ in front of the Capitol Building. I want to have this assembled for photo at 3:50 p.m. If we have enough people we’ll form a human lei around the building.

I have the permit for the rally and want your support and participation for this event. As an environmental leader, please spread the word to your circle of influence.

Please see www.350.org. Thos organization and movement is founded by Bill McKibben.

I look forward to hearing from you and let’s make this the most significant environmental rally to date!

Sustainably yours,
Keith Rose
